Alaska’s Little Norway

Petersburg, Alaska, is commonly referred to as Alaska’s “Little Norway.” Situated in Southeast Alaska, Petersburg is a quaint fishing community established in the early 1900s by Peter Buschmann, a Norwegian immigrant. Buschmann constructed a cannery, sawmill, docks, and early structures. Prior to Buschmann’s settlement, Tlingits from Kupreanof Island utilized a summer fish camp at the north end of Mitkof Island. The island has a rich history, with indigenous people from earlier cultures having left remnants of fish traps and petroglyphs that carbon-date back some 10,000 years.

Sunny Days in Southeast Alaska

We are always excited when the sun is out because we can fly our drone and show those of you who aren’t familiar with Southeast Alaska what it looks like here!

Landslide on Mitkof Island

A landslide occurred on Halloween around 4:30 which cut power off to all of the island. Diesel generators reconnected the town to about 4 mile and hydro connected houses after 6 mile. By November 2nd all internet, power, and phone was restored to the island. No one was hurt and no homes were affected except for one homeowner’s driveway which was degraded. Much thanks to local contractors, state and federal employees to jump on the scene and get the slide cleared! Mitkof island is famous for coming together in a time of need and helping one another out making it one more reason to live Southeast Alaska.
